ONI has been our holy grail brand from the very beginning, and we've finally been able to build a relationship with the brand and owner Masao Oishi. The brand is as old school and secretive as it appears. They use traditional construction methods to create low-tension, irregular, slubby denim that has a cult following. Their selvedge tickles the ancient part of our brain that makes us love denim so much. ONI does one thing and they do it to perfection. We can't wait to explore their wonderful world of fabric and fits with you guys.
Every time we think we've seen it all, ONI pops up with an incredible new fabrication that blows our hair back. This time, they've picked an extremely slubby fabric with little tufts and offshoots that poke through the fabric to create fleck. Oishi wanted this denim to look like the concrete on Japan's roads and sidewalks. By using a super loose tension, they not only allowed the texture to pock through the weave but kept the denim airy for wearing during the summer months. For being lightweight (comparatively) it doesn't feel any less substantial than the hardy stuff. They've taken the 20oz secret denim, previously known as the Asphalt Denim, and thinned it out a bit to create this iteration. What was a bit of a surprise to us was that the warp is beige this time. It has a rich, almost brown tint this round which cranks the denim up a few more notches in our minds. They've also used that gorgeous Kabuki selvedge ticker to give you a new look when flipping the cuff. There are all the ONI bells and whistles you're used to, which are listed below. Fit Notes: Shop owner Tommy is wearing a size 33 in this Classic Straight fit. This particular iteration was also a bit smaller in the waist, but pretty normal everywhere else. He could get the waist buttoned but didn't have any extra room. He has been wearing a 33 in almost all fits as a baseline to give recommendations. The 33 fit small in the waist and fit really nicely in the leg. It's a little more tailored than the Wide Straight, overall. Tommy is 5'10," 165lbs, with a 32-33" waist.
